Frequently Asked Questions
Who were last year’s winners?
Lawson’s Deli of Aldeburgh were crowned Deli of the Year 2010. Over to Claire and Richard of Lawson’s Deli -
“We were thrilled to win Deli of the Year 2010 and it’s made a huge impact on our business in terms of customer awareness and loyalty. People have been coming through the door just to see why we won! Our regulars are supportive all year round and they were delighted to see the banner outside the deli saying that we had won the top spot. We also got to go picking olives in Spain with Giles and the team from Olives Et Al and we made our own olive oil – it’s a trip we will never forget,” said Richard Lawson of Lawson’s Deli.
Lawson’s also spent another ‘never to be forgotten’ day at Fortnum & Mason which was part of their prize. The day included a tour of the store with heads of each department, buyers and chefs and a look behind the scenes – doors were opened, food sampled, sourcing advice given freely and Claire commented afterwards that it was an amazing day where she absorbed a huge amount.
Lawson’s held a Celebration of Deli of the Year 2010, with balloons, banners, flyers and all manner of activities and amongst all the celebrations, Lawson’s chef Peter ran the Great North Run wearing a vest with ‘I work for Lawson’s Delicatessen - Deli of the Year 2010’ emblazoned across it!
Some great press coverage resulted – the front page of Jamie Oliver’s web site, a lovely mention in The Telegraph which resulted in sales of pies and other Lawson’s specialities going through the roof, local coverage in press and on the radio and television coverage on Market Kitchen on Sky’s Good Food channel.
How many Deli entries are expected?
Last year 400 delis received 11,000 votes so this year we’re really hoping to build on this great start and with the support of The Guild of Fine Food to reach 500 or more delis this year.

My deli applied last year, can I reapply this year?
Any delis that applied last year should definitely apply again – the judges had a huge task deciding between the entries as there were so many strong delis and farm shops to choose from.
What are the judges looking for this year? What’s the ‘Deli Attitude’?
The judges look at every detail - first of all, the judges see the Entries submitted by the Delis along with their customers’ comments and then members of the judging panel also visit a selection of shortlisted delis – only then can they decide who’ll be crowned Deli of the Year 2011. The judging criteria last year was tough and any of the judges would tell you that the whole process was detailed, thorough, unbiased and extremely fair. Otherwise the prize holds little value to the deli who wins- or to the sector. The team of prestigious judges; including food journalists, food buyers and members of the Guild of Fine Food will make up the judging panel – keep an eye on the Deli of the Year website where the names of the judges will be announced shortly.
The judges are looking for a retailer with the ‘Deli Attitude’. Firstly, an understanding of what makes a really great deli experience. It’s about a connection with people – understanding that they have chosen to walk into a deli for something special. And that they may not know what special thing they’re looking for yet! Helpful, friendly staff with detailed product knowledge and a willingness to give a bit of information, without overloading the customer. Products on shelves that are interesting and displayed well, recipe ideas, food matching information, a good choice and background knowledge about producers. The judges are interested to know what it is that a particular deli does differently to other retailers. What’s your Deli's Mission? What keeps customers coming back time after time – these are all things you might want to write about when you tell us why you think your deli has the ‘Deli Attitude’. In 2011, the judging will take place throughout regions and so there will be 10 regional winners – this will mean that there's more opportunities to generate press coverage.
The things that made some Deli Entries stand out more than others last year were menus, photos, customer comments and plans for activities throughout the year – importantly, these all backed up and supported the ‘Deli Attitude’ statement and Top 5 Deli Counter Tips, submitted by the delis, and showed the judges that the nominated delis were really doing everything they could do build and maintain strong businesses.
