How it all works if you've been nominated

The nationwide competition to find the Deli of the Year 2012 - the delicatessen with more 'deli-attitude' than any other is open!

Who are Olives Et Al & why are we running the competition?

We work to support our customers and the whole sector of independent shops as much as we can. We all know how tough trading can be at the best of times so coming up with something that can get people talking about your deli and through your doors to boost business and generate some press is always helpful...to find out more about us visit www.olivesetal.com/about_us

Who can enter?

It's open to all sorts of shops from High Street Delis to Farmshops to Post Office Village shops with a deli counter. It would be good to see newly-established delis applying – we will be running an extensive media campaign throughout the nomination, voting and judging period and already one glossy mag has asked for any nominated delis that are by the coast!

IMPORTANT BIT - You don't have to stock Olives Et Al products to take part. Any delis that took part last year should definitely enter again, only delis that have already won Deli of the Year aren’t allowed to enter again. Sorry Dave, but rules are rules.

Here's why you should definitely take part in 2012...

  • It's great PUBLICITY, simply being nominated can give your deli a publicity boost (especially if you send a press release to your local radio, paper, TV or local community website). As a result of participating in and winning Deli of the Year 2010, Lawson’s Deli rode a wave of fantastic publicity and deservedly so - the type of thing we’re talking about includes; the front page of Jamie Oliver’s web site, a lovely mention in The Telegraph which resulted in sales of pies and other Lawson’s specialities going through the roof, local coverage in press and on the radio and television coverage on Market Kitchen on Sky’s Good Food channel all featured Lawson’s – all as a result of raising the profile of Lawson’s through different channels.

  • Besides the trophy and the publicity the winning deli will also WIN A TRIP TO SPAIN for two to experience an authentic Spanish olive harvest. The winners will be treated to a 3 day trip to the Extremadura region of western Spain to enjoy lots of regional specialities. It can make a real impact on YOUR BUSINESS. Over to David Greenman of Arch House Deli, Clifton Village, Bristol (Deli of the Year Winner 2011)

"“In the month we won Deli of the Year we recorded a 45% increase in sales and at least half of this was directly attributable to the award."

"In the months that followed, this increase remained high with sales up over a third throughout the rest of the year and this continued throughout January this year. Winning the award was key to this increase, through the extra publicity we gained which brought new people through the door – the good thing is that we have managed to keep them as customers”

  • Any delis that applied last year should definitely apply again – the judges had a huge task deciding between the entries as there were so many strong delis and farm shops to choose from.

What are the judges looking for this year? What’s the ‘Deli Attitude’?

The judges look at every detail - Your Deli Profile, your customers’ comments and then members of the judging panel also visit a selection of shortlisted delis – only then can they decide who’ll be crowned Deli of the Year 2012. The judging criteria last year was tough and any of the judges would tell you that the whole process was detailed, thorough, unbiased and extremely fair. Otherwise the prize holds little value to the deli who wins- or to the sector. The team of prestigious judges; including food journalists, food buyers and members of the Guild of Fine Food will make up the judging panel – keep an eye on the Deli of the Year website where the names of the judges will be announced shortly.

The judges are interested to know what it is that you do differently to other delis. What’s your Deli Mission? How do you keep your customers coming back time after time – these are all things you might want to write about when you tell us why you think your deli has the ability to win the title of Deli of the Year 2012!
